Nusa Menjangan is a 1,5 km long and 500 m wide island in
the north/west Bali national park. The Indonesian government has limited the daily
allowance for divers. All dive sites are only a short boat trip away. Except the western
part of the island coral growth starts in shallow water, stretching out for about 20 to 30
meters before suddenly dropping vertically to a depth of 30 meters. The western end
features a deep lagoon with a reef slope in a 45 degree angle. Currents at Nusa Menjangan
are weak to moderate with the strongest currents present at the western lagoon. Therefore
Menjangan is a perfect spot for beginners. Because of the beautifully grown lagoon, it is
also an outstanding spot for snorkelling. Menjangan's underwater world surely deserves to
be listed as one of the world's top dive sites. The result of a coral count (carried
out by diving pioneer Jacques-Yves Cousteau) stated that on this small island alone
features more coral species than the whole Caribbean!
Quite often you will encounter napoleon fish, turtles, bumphead parrotfish and grouper. In
deeper water you may encounter whitetip- and blacktip reef sharks with a max. length of
1,5 m and barracuda. Lucky divers will find eagle rays, sunfish and even whale sharks.
Lots of small but interesting creatures are permanent residents to keep you busy in case
the big guys are 'having a day off' :-)
Menjangan is one of our our most recommended dive sites!

Tulamben Wreck is directly situated near the beach on Bali's northeast coast.
The 125m long and 16.6 meters wide wreck rests in a 90 degree angle with the deck facing the sea side and used
to be an American supply ship named USA Liberty". Anchored off the coast of
Lombok, the ship was torpdoed by the Japanese submarine I-66 (which became later I-166) on January 11 1942 off Bali at the position S 8.05, E 115.28.
Miraculously nobody
got hurt, but the damage turned the ship into a non-functioning and useless hull. The
American Navy's plan to tow the ship to Singaraja harbor (north Bali) failed as the harbor
was completely occupied, so the ship was intentionally stranded on the rocky beach of
Tulamben, where it was unloaded. In 1963 the volcano Agung erupted and the magma flow
pressed the ship back into the sea where it presently rests at a depth of 3 to 29 meters.
Since then, coral covered the wreckage completely and turned it into a home for many
species of fish. From time to time, a Napoleon fish or huge barracuda drops by. You
may dive or snorkel this wreck comfortably, accessing it directly from the beach.

Tulamben Wall ...divides into three great dive sites: the
wall, the coral garden and shark point. All dive sites can be
accessed directly from the beach.
The Wall starts at a depth of 1 m to then drop straight to 40 m.
Besides amazing coral growth this reef also features an unbelievable landscape sculpted by
many overhanging rocks. The presence of smaller reef fish is abundant, with angel fish
being the species worth mentioning. Besides emperor angel fish, yellow-faced angelfish and
blue-banded angel fish can be found with the duke fish rounding out the selection as a
member of the angel fish family. Quite often, huge schools of jack fish pass the wall,
darkening the sun. Although it is a wall, this dive site is also suitable for snorkeling.
The
coral garden is only about a hundred meters away from our dive base Tauch Terminal
Tulamben, which is located directly at the beach. The coral garden starts at a depth of
2-15 m and is wonderfully grown featuring stone- and soft coral alike. Besides numerous
species of reef fish, the beautiful blue-yellow ribbon moray eel has found a home here.
This dive site is also a superb snorkelling spot with none to moderate current.
Shark
Point can be reached via snorkelling close to the wall. The residing sharks are
commonly whitetip- and blacktip reef sharks and may rest at a depth of 20 to 30 m in a
sandy area. When currents are present, occasionally grey reef sharks and even hammerhead
sharks circle the blue. The current may become quite strong here and sometimes cold water
might swell up forming thermoclines. Thermoclines may lower the water temperature to 24
degrees for a short period of time. This dive site is not suitable for snorkelling.

Amed is
situated in north east Bali. Amed's villagers exist from salt panning. Arriving there you
will notice the woodpiles which are used for this technique of salt extraction. The coral
garden starts right off the beach breaking the surface with a staghorn coral field and
huge schools of glass fish. This is Bali's best snorkelling area. The actual dive site can
be reached by outrigger boat. The dive starts in a shallow area of 3 to 8 m in a wonderful
coral garden. You may encounter turtles and bumphead parrot fish. A moderate current will
guide you in approx. 20 min to the drop off's edge. One of Amed's drop offs drops straight
down to 30 m. It is beautifully grown with soft coral and any possible species of reef
fish can be found there. White- and blacktip reef sharks pop in occasionally to patrol
their feeding ground. The highlight however is an area at 27 m of depth with a sandy field
full of blue-spotted stingrays.
The other drop off is only 25 m deep, ideal for the subsequent
shallower dive. The dive site features a pinnacle, which erects from a depth of 25 m
forming a scenic swim through in 20 m. At both drop offs your 5m safety stop will be
highly entertaining. Both dives are drift dives with a mild current, with outrigger boats
following the divers. Both are very comfortable dives. The visibility may be limited
during the rainy season (December to March), urging us to visit other dive sites with
better conditions.

Gili Biaha / Lipha Gili Biaha / Lipha We will leave the harbor of Padang Bai with
destination Candi Dasa. After a 45 minute boat trip by traditional 14 m long outrigger
boat, we will arrive at Lipha, a fishing village with a fantastic sandy beach. The village
is surrounded by palm trees and hidden about 3 kms away from the main road. Usually,
children and fishermen are to be found on the beach where a coral reef (Lipha) starts at a
depth of 2 m and gently drops to 15 m. It is a perfect snorkelling site and also extremely
suitable for Discover Scuba Diving.
From here we will depart (with the certified divers) for a one hour boat trip to visit the
huge rock Gili Biaha. On the open sea side of this rock, a slope drops to a depth of
several hundred meters. The slope is covered with beautiful stone- and soft coral, which
remain small but sturdy because of the permanently present current. Because of the rock's
exposed position facing the open sea it offers a fair chance for big fish encounters
including grey-, white- and blacktip reef sharks which sometimes can be obeserved while
asleep in a cave.
The rock side facing the beach drops in a 45 degree angle into a depth of 60 meters plus.
Here you may find nurse sharks and black-banded sea snakes. Both dives are drift dives
with an attentive boat crew following the divers. Because of it's exposed position in the
open sea and occasionally strong currents, Biaha is an outstanding dive site for
experienced divers only. Uunfortunately this great dive site is not suitable for
snorkelling.

The Blue Lagoon is situated near Padang Bai's harbor only 5
boat minutes away. We will be diving both lagoons at either side of the harbor. The
southern part of the reef drops vertically to 20 m and continues in a sandy area. The drop
off is covered by stone- and soft coral. Many nudi branches and some flatworms can be
found here. The underwater landscape is dominated by up to 4 m high growing soft coral
where large spiny lobsters can be found. When reaching the open water large schools of bat
fish accompany the divers. On the northern side the dive starts in 3 to 5 m deep water.
Either we will explore an interesting slope which drops to 30 m featuring plenty of 'fan'
worms and feather stars, or we dive the sandy area while drifting between beautiful soft
coral piles. At short distance a large staghorn coral field stretches 8 m of depth,
accommodating oriental sweetlips, basslets and schoals of glass fish. Finally, the sandy
area is replaced by stone coral fields. At the outer reef border, the current increases in
strength, attracting white tip reef sharks, hunting for prey.
The
blue lagoon is actually a perfect spot to start your diving trip in Bali. The relaxed
environment supports rusty divers who need to get used to diving again and who need a
chance for buoyancy and equipment checks. Furthermore, the lagoon is an excellent site for
snorkelling, discover scuba diving, swimming and sunbathing.

Nusa Penida & Lembongan Ceningan because of the present current these are
typical dive site and therefore not suitable for snorkelling or discover scuba diving. By
outrigger boat, the islands can be reached within 50 minutes and sometimes the sea may be
a bit rough. The reef characteristics are the same for both islands with the exception
that Penida's reef drops steeper than the Lembongan reef. The visibility reaches usually
20 meters or more. Sometimes thermoclines cause sudden drops in water temperature. Because
of the conditions here, coral grow faster than on any other reef. Large schools of
basslets circle the reef and quite often you will find the wonderful egg cowries as well
as high whip coral. Big fish encounters featuring manta rays, eagle rays, sharks,
giant turtles and sunfish are common and therefore you may always keep one eye away from
the reef, scanning the endless blue. These islands are a must for the experienced and
demanding diver. Currents may become very strong and changes direction from time to time -
thus, advanced diving experience is a prerequisite! All dives are drift dives, with boats
following the divers.
