Keeping Ahead of the Wave
Benoa Hotels and Local Citizens Cooperate to Save Lives and Become 'Tsunami Ready.'
On Thursday, September 10, 2009, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the Ramada Benoa Hotel between the local community and Tanjung Benoa tourism industries to make the small peninsula just north of the Nusa Dua Complex "tsunami ready."
An initiative of GTZ (German Technical Cooperation)-GITEWS (German-Indonesian Cooperation for Tsunami Early Warning System) and Bali Hotels Association [BHA] and assisted by the Indonesian Red Cross - the project has created a potentially life-saving framework for Tanjung Benoa in the event of a tsunami. A flat and very low-lying peninsula exposed directly to the Indian Ocean, the community of Tanjung Benoa could offer no "high ground" for local resident seeking safety if the tsunami siren sounded, warning of an imminent inbound wave.

Welcoming a 'BIG' family member
70 Kilogram Baby Female Elephant Born at Elephant Safari Park March 15, 2009.
Julius Caesar was warned "Beware the ides of March" - foreshadowing the date of his untimely death of March 15th. Another warning with "Caesarian undertones" might also have been issued to Fatimah, a female elephant in Bali, who gave birth to a 70 kilogram progeny on March 15th at the Taro Elephant Safari Park. Fortunately, nature took a smooth course eliminating the need for any surgical assistance named after ancient Roman rulers as Bali's Elephant Safari Park near Ubud, welcomed the arrival of a bouncing baby girl on Sunday, March 15, 2009. Weighing 70 kilograms and measuring 110 centimeters in length and 80 centimeters in height, the Sumatran elephant was born "naturally" without the intervention of a veterinarian. This was probably all as well, given the fact that the baby probably weighed more than the delivery doctor.

Russia appoints its Honorary Consul in Bali
Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Alexander A. Ivanov on Wednesday inaugurated a Russian Honorary Consul in Bali, in a bid to better protect Russian citizens working and holidaying in the resort island.
Ivanov, accompanied by his wife Lyudmila Ivanova, inaugurated Chairul Nuku Kamka, chairman of an association of tour operators in Bali that deals exclusively with Russian tourists, as the new honorary consul, at an event at the St. Regis Hotel in Nusa Dua on Wednesday evening.
"This will establish stronger relations between Indonesia, Bali in particular, and the people of Russia," Ivanov said.
The inauguration makes Chairul the first Russian honorary consul in Indonesia, a position endowed by the Kremlin in anticipation of the increase in Russian tourists to Bali.
Bali receives an average of 40,000 Russian tourists a year. Hotels and travel agents prize Russian tourists because they tend to stay longer - an average of 10 to 14 days - and can spend up to US$1,500 per person.
The newly appointed consul expects to start his job by raising the number of Russian tourists by 25 percent, to 50,000 Russian tourists this year.
When asked whether the global financial crisis would affect his plans, Chairul said he was not worried, citing the "excellent" cooperation between the Russian government and the Bali tourism industry that has allowed two direct chartered flights per week from Moscow to Denpasar.

The Galungan festival, Bali's major feast, is held throughout the island and is an annual event in the wuku year. During this ten day period all the gods, including the supreme deity Sanghyang Widi, come down to earth for the festivities. Barongs prance from temple to temple and village to village. The last and most important day of the ten day festival is called Kuningan.
Hindu saka calendar is a lunar cycle that more closely follows our own year in terms of the length of the year. Nyepi is a major festival of the saka year, it's the last day of the year, the day of total silence throughout the island. No activity, no traffic at all on the roads, no fire may be lit for 24 hours. Great purification and sacrificial rites are held the day before so as to exorcize evil spirits from every corner of the island.

More Whales Beached on Bali Shore
10 Whales Die on Bali Beachhead
At least 10 whales have washed ashore and died on Bali's southern beaches in recent weeks which local conservationists are blaming on bad weather and unusually strong currents affecting the area.
Quoted by the Associated Press, Budi Adnyana of the Bali Conservation and Natural Resource Agency identified two of the ten dead whales as two giant sperm with the remaining eight as short-finned pilot whales.
The whale carcasses washed ashore and became entangled in the mangrove reserves surround Serangan island, near the popular beach resort area of Sanur.
While local villagers harvested the whale blubber as a source of natural oils, two of the short-finned pilot whales were evacuated by officials and sent to a local school of veterinary medicine for evaluation. DNA samples were also taken from all the dead whales to determine if the mammals were related members of a single pod.

Another 3000 years old Sarcophagus found in Ginyar
Digging Up Our Past
Intensive digging of clay fields for the production of building bricks in the fields of the Keramas village in Gianyar, Bali is yielding an unexpected harvest of ancient sarcophagi that affirms Bali's advanced state of human settlement dating back 3 millennia. As reported the discovery of the twelfth ancient stone burial urn in the fields near Blahbatuh on January 12, 2009 was seen by archaeologists as proof of Bali's inhabitation by an advanced society centuries before the dawn of the Christian era.
On Sunday, February 1, 2009, the thirteenth stone coffin was unearthed only 7 meters from the similar discovery made nearly three weeks before. The latest object is 60 centimetres long and 57 centimetres high.
Drs. Made Swastika, a researcher form the Bali Archaeology Department confirmed that the Keramas area in the Gianyar regency was popular human settlement area 2,000 – 3,000 years ago as proven by the continuing discovery of burial objects and the ruins of religious sites found there dating from the megalithic era. The thirteen burial urns are now part of the collection of the Prehistoric Museum in Bedulu (Museum Prubakala Bedulu). source:balidiscovery.com

New Import Rules Delayed
 |
Trade Minister Mari Pangestu Postpones Tough New Import Rules to Get Help Get Indonesian Businesses through the Holiday Season.
Kompas reports that the government will postpone the implementation of new import regulations due to take effect from December 15, 2008.
The new regulations intended to protect local industry and Indonesian markets will now only come into effect on February 1, 2009, to facilitate a smooth transition and avoid any possible marketplace disruptions over the coming holiday period.
The new import rules are set forth in by the Minister of Trade's Regulation Number 44 of 2008 published on October 31, 2008. Those regulations stipulate that the importation of garments, stockings, electronics, toys, food and beverages must enter the country only via registered importers. Registered importers, in turn, must submit annual importation plans stipulating specific amounts and types of items they wish to bring into Indonesia. In a further effort to end smuggling, the new regulations also restricts to importation via the ports of Jakarta, Surabaya, Semarang, Medan and Makassar.

Indonesia drinkers face alcohol shortage
 |
At first glance, the reason is an anti-corruption drive. A few months ago, the government decided to clamp down on the huge black market in alcohol, and to stop companies bribing their way through customs.
That left the country's sole legal importer trying to meet a demand that is more than four times the size of its legal quotas.
The head of Bali's tourist board says his members are getting increasingly worried as the Christmas high season approaches.
But the head of fiscal policy at the finance ministry was wary. The government was considering letting more legal alcohol into the country he said, but it was worried about the consequences of doing so.
And part of that worry is down to the simple fact of who is drinking the wine and the cocktails served up here.
Foreign tourists in Bali, yes. Foreign businessmen in Jakarta too. Government officials admit they want to discourage consumption; that they are worried about Indonesians drinking more; that it needs strict regulation.
This debate pits the country's economic need against some of its most deeply held social values.
It is a debate that is likely to grow - at least while there are still a few bottles in the country's cellars to fuel the discussion.

Kuta Beach Prone to Tsunami Threat
 |
Kuta Officials Meet with Local Businesses to Discuss Vertical Escape Routes to Safeguard 20,000 Local Residents from Threat of Tsunamis.
Radar Bali reports that 25 representatives from Kuta-area hotels and representatives of the Indonesian Department of Geophysics and Meteorology (BMG) met on Wednesday, December 10, 2008, to discuss earthquake and tsunami preparedness. The meeting, convened by Kuta government officials, identified that the Kuta beachfront was exposed to the threat of tsunami from any off-shore earthquake measuring more than 6.5 on the Richter scale. The Village Head (Lurah) of Kuta, Gede Suparta, called on local hotels to devise an evacuation plan in the event of a tsunami.
"Unlike Tanjung Benoa (in South Bali), where four hotels have been designated as vertical evacuation zones in the event of a tsunami, Kuta has yet to establish a similar emergency plan," Suparta said.
Pointing out that evacuation to higher ground was an impossibility in Kuta, Suparta called for a vertical escape route to be established using hotels with four or more levels.

The manager of distribution for the State Oil Company Pertamina in Bali, Nusra J. Simanjuntak, told the press that fuel supplies in Bali remain adequate in the face of current daily consumption of 1,600 tons of premium, 400 tons of diesel and 475 tons of kerosene.

06.12.07 Seeds For Bali
Visitors to Bali and delegates attending the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) between December 3 – 14, 2007 will have the opportunity to purchase trees saplings that will eventually become part of a "new" forest on the barren island of Nusa Penida.
Seeds for Bali is a non-profit program initiated by Bank Danamon Indonesia and co-sponsored by Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC), in partnership with Friends of the National Parks Foundation (FNPF). The program aims to pilot reforestation efforts on some of the most arid places in Bali, with "seed money" provided by Danamon, BTDC and donations from American Express Card members worldwide.
Through the promotion of Seeds for Bali at 3 tented locations in Bali the organizers hope to help accelerate public awareness on the important role of trees and reforestation in the effort to combat global warming. Via the sale of subsidized trees for eventual planting on Nusa Penida, participants will make a real impact on a specific micro-habitat conservation effort, offset their carbon footprint and make a positive contribution to the economy of Bali.

03.12.07 UN Climate Change Conference
Twenty thousand delegates, observers, business leaders, and government ministers from 190 countries meet in Bali, Indonesia, from December 3-14. They are gathering to discuss life after the Kyoto Protocol, the U.N. treaty on climate change, which expires in 2012.
The Bali meeting will engage delegates in dozens of technical, scientific and financial discussions relating to the current climate change protocol. But they are also meeting to consider the building blocks and a timetable for crafting a new, post-Kyoto agreement.
Negotiators hope to write a new treaty by 2009. Nations will then have three years to ratify it before the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012. Pershing worries that 2009 may be too ambitious a timeline because the lead-up falls during a U.S. presidential campaign and the final year of the Bush administration.
